Surviving a Wild Week in the Digital World

We have just come through an extremely wild week in the digital world. As always, it has been a busy week, and suddenly, our attention was drawn to an alarming situation. Some community members in our Discord general channel were questioning whether we had been hacked, with a few stating it as a fact. After a brief period of investigation, we realized it was no joke. We had indeed been hacked! Fortunately, thanks to the swift actions of Pirate SR, E2Evolve, and dbE2, we managed to catch the flow and steer everything back to the right path quickly.

In response to the attack, we deleted the direct messages (DMs) sent by the hacker. We were banned from some servers because the hacker sent promotional messages for a fraudulent crypto scheme not only to DMs but also to other servers’ general channels. The attack originated from Zarechnyy, Penza Oblast, Russia. To educate our community, we have attached pictures of the incident.

To enhance our security, we have fortified our Discord server against future cyberattacks.
Just two days after resolving the Discord incident, our MetaMask wallet was hacked. Our team discovered the hack when we tried to purchase some ETH for fuel used in Illuvium Overworld with a step by step help of Fight4ETH. As soon as we uploaded the needed ETH to our MetaMask wallet, it was stolen immediately. We are thankful to Fight4ETH for the support and kindness plus for gifting us a fuel crate to ease our pain.

We contacted the MetaMask support and they informed us that our Recovery Phrase or Private Key had been compromised, allowing a sweeper script to monitor and automatically transfer any tokens we sent to the account. Despite never sharing our private key or recovery phrase, this incident occurred. Thankfully, we keep most of our $ESS within E2 balance, but this time we had sent some $ESS to our MetaMask wallet to prepare for the $ESS Giveaway. Along with the $ESS, some ETH and IMX were stolen. The estimated loss is under $500, which we consider fortunate compared to other users who have lost over $4,000 worth of crypto.

This experience has driven us to transition to the use of Cold Wallets. We have resolved the situation by deleting the hacked MetaMask account and creating a new one to transfer the $ESS prizes to our winners. We hope this serves as a cautionary tale to our readers about the potential dangers of hot wallets. In our next article, we will provide a guide on the top Cold Wallets available.
